Senate Commits to Strong Oversight of South-West Development Commission
The Senate has reaffirmed its commitment to exercising strong oversight over the newly formed governing board and management of the South-West Development Commission (SWDC).
Senator Yunus Akintunde, Chairman of the Senate Committee on SWDC, made this commitment during the committee’s inaugural meeting held on Tuesday in Abuja. He emphasized that the committee’s role would be vital in promoting transparency, good governance, and infrastructural development across the South-West zone.
According to Akintunde, the committee’s broader vision is to unlock the full potential of the region by driving economic growth, fostering social equity, advancing infrastructure, and enhancing human capital. He noted that the committee’s formation aligns with Section 62 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), marking a deliberate step by the Senate to empower communities through sustainable development and shared expertise.
He assured that the committee would be results-driven, focused on making a meaningful impact on the lives of the people.
“Today’s meeting sets the foundation for our future work,” he said. “We are here to affirm our values, define our priorities, and establish a framework for collaboration. I urge everyone to engage in open dialogue, mutual respect, and shared decision-making as we fulfill our mandate.”
Akintunde added that, as chairman, he bears a deep sense of responsibility not just to lead, but to listen, foster collaboration, and ensure the committee becomes a hub for innovation, inclusiveness, and delivery of democratic dividends.
He also disclosed that the committee’s first task will be the screening of presidential nominees for the positions of Chairman, Managing Director, and other board members of the SWDC, scheduled for June 18.
Expressing confidence in the team, Akintunde highlighted the committee’s collective strength and capacity for success.
“Great accomplishments are born from unity, clear vision, and determination,” he said. “We have the right people, the right goals, and the momentum to achieve success.”
Committee member Senator Gbenga Daniel echoed the high expectations of the public, expressing confidence that the commission would bring tangible benefits to the region.
Senator Wasiu Eshilokun emphasized the importance of prioritizing human capital and infrastructure development, particularly the improvement of road networks across the South-West.
Similarly, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire noted that the committee’s core objective is to ensure that the commission’s leadership fulfills its mandate for the benefit of citizens.
