Trump: Israel and Iran May Reach Deal, But “Sometimes They Have to Fight It Out”
President Donald Trump said Sunday that he believes there’s a “good chance” a deal can be reached between Israel and Iran, though he suggested that conflict between the two nations might be inevitable.
“I hope there’s going to be a deal. I think it’s time for a deal, and we’ll see what happens — but sometimes they have to fight it out,” Trump told reporters when asked how he planned to help de-escalate rising tensions.
Speaking outside the White House before departing for the G7 summit in Canada, Trump added, “I think there’s a good chance there will be a deal.”
He also claimed that “we get along really well” with Iran and expressed the belief that Israel and Iran “have great respect for each other,” despite ongoing hostilities.
When pressed on whether he had urged Israel to halt airstrikes on Iran, Trump declined to answer directly, saying only: “I don’t want to say that.”
Trump’s comment that “sometimes they have to fight it out” echoed his earlier remarks about the war between Russia and Ukraine. Earlier this month in the Oval Office, he likened such conflicts to playground fights between children.
“Sometimes you see two young children fighting like crazy. They hate each other, and they’re fighting in a park, and you try to pull them apart. They don’t want to be pulled. Sometimes you’re better off letting them fight for a while, and then pulling them apart,” Trump said at the time.
